One area that has had received a great deal of attention from the HSE is the appointment of a Competent Person. The legislation is very clear -
The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, Regulation 7
“Health and safety assistance
Every employer shall appoint one or more competent persons to assist him in undertaking the measures he needs to take to comply with the requirements imposed upon him by or under the relevant statutory provisions”
The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, Regulation 7 – Approved Code of Practice
“The appointment of such health and safety assistants or advisors does not absolve the employer from responsibilities for health and safety under the HSW Act……….
Where external services are employed, they will usually be appointed in an advisory capacity only”
We can provide the services of “External Source of Competent Safety and Health Advisor” to your organisation as required by the above Regulations. This will require a number of visits per year to your premises and workplaces (this being dependent upon the size and nature of your undertaking) to ensure that you are meeting the requirements.
You would need to provide all relevant information and documentation for us to review and amend/update as required. If policy documentation is not available or any existing considered being inappropriate or insufficient, we would produce new documentation for your retention and future use.
You would be required to provide us with reports of all incidents, injuries and other accidents as soon as practicable after the event. We will assist in the investigation of all such incidents, injuries and other accidents upon your request.
We will also provide you with information regarding new or changed legislation together with guidance on future compliance.
We can also provide advice and guidance on compliance matters as identified by Regulatory Bodies or Insurers.
Health and Safety advice
It’s the old story – 90% of health and safety is just pure common sense!
However, with the legal system we currently have in place it’s another old story that we hear just as often - “ignorance of the law is no defence”!!!
We are in a position to help you with that last 10% and also to help you ensure that you will not be saying “well I didn’t know that”.
With regular reviews we can give you up-to-date, professional advice on the most effective manner in which YOUR company can comply with health and safety law.
All our programmes are specifically designed and tailored for each individual client, there are no “off the shelf packages” used.
As important is the type of advice. We use plain English and do everything we can to get rid of the “techno-speak” and ensure that everything we say to you is simple, clear and easy to understand.
The Control of Noise at Work Regulations make specific requirements on ALL employers NOT to expose their employees to harmful noise levels.
The requirement to carry out formal assessments to demonstrate that noise levels are adequately controlled is also contained in these regulations.
Only specifically trained, competent persons should be carrying out these assessments and we are in a position to deliver this service.
Taking a full set of readings, producing a report highlighting areas of concern and recommending particular actions to control noise levels and employees exposure all form part of this service.
We offer a range of training programmes, some in short modular form, some in larger packages of ½ or even full day duration.
The short modules can be combined to make longer programmes and it is important to note that all training programmes will be designed to meet your specific needs.
We will provide certificates in two forms:
1. Certificate of attendance to signify that a person has attended a training programme; or
2. Certificate of SUCCESSFUL attendance signifying that a person has attended a training programme and successfully passed an exit test – these are the preferred type of training programmes by clients.
Courses available include:
• Office health and safety
• General health and safety management
• Construction site safety awareness
• Confined spaces awareness
• Risk assessment
• Accident reporting
• Working at height awareness
• Asbestos awareness
• Manual handling
• Corporate manslaughter
Insurers Risk Improvements
Every year, or so it seems to some companies, the insurer sends out a risk surveyor to comment on how the company is performing in health, safety and risk management.
These visits invariably result in a list of risk improvements, completion of which is essential to maintain full cover.
We have extensive experience in interpreting the actual requirements and assisting clients in compliance.
We also will challenge the surveyor on your behalf should the requirements or their associated timescales seem unrealistic.
Fire Risk Assessments
Since the implementation of The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, there has been a legal requirement to have a fire risk assessment carried out on your premises, the results of which should provide you with an action plan on how best to improve and manage your fire safety at your premises.
Carrying out a survey of this type is a technical activity and is easy to get wrong without the correct level of training and experience.
We are in a position to carry out these assessments on simple premises and have partnering agreements with specialist companies for the more complex premises.
Should a Fire Inspector visit your premises he will almost certainly ask for the most up-to-date assessment and if there is not one available he will issue an improvement notice.
Construction Site Inspections
Regular inspections on all of your sites can be a time consuming task leaving you with little or no time to actively manage them.
Outsourcing this service will free up your time and allow you to demonstrate sound management practice by using an independent inspector.
We have years of experience in this field and in and one of our consultants in fact headed up a specialist construction consultant team for one of the largest consultancies in the UK.
Producing on site reports with copies sent on to your Head office you can be assured that all items identified have been fully discussed at site level and that appropriate actions have been agreed.
General Premises Inspections
Your peace of mind assured.
Premises inspections by an independent inspector often identify matters that are so close that you fail to see them.
An annual inspection with a full written report of findings and recommendations is included in this service helping you to stay in front of your competitors.
